Steering Committee and Leadership Handover
The Climate Justice Coalition began the year by hosting a steering committee and leadership handover meeting. Taking place from 20-22 February 2025 at Gender Links Cottages in Johannesburg, the gathering was spent inducting our newly-elected leaders into the ways of the Coalition. The programme was designed to encourage team building, create an understanding about how the Coalition works and where the new leaders could make interventions.
We had sessions on understanding positionality, values, governance policies, financial planning, and strategic visioning for 2025 and beyond. We also hosted a gender and inclusivity training, with a commitment to putting gender on the agenda as we continue building our intersectional climate justice movement. There was a session on leadership reflections with outgoing GS, DS and the secretariat, and a commitment to transferring experiences and lessons to the new steering committee to strengthen the leadership in the Coalition. The sessions mapping the activities of the Coalition for the next couple of years brought forward exciting ideas. The next few years will be powerful indeed.
New members were brimming with enthusiasm and ideas towards building a collective vision to shape the Coalition’s path forward. It was a fruitful engagement and the success of the three-day event is a testament to the strategic thinking and leadership of our incoming GS and DS. Through accountability, transparency, care and solidarity we will continue to build this movement. We look forward to carrying out the aim to pursue a transformative climate justice agenda that advances social, economic, and environmental justice for all, especially communities living at the intersections of multiple oppression and injustice.
