Joburg activists march to kick polluters out of Africa
From 18–24 August, communities and movements across Africa – from Uganda to Mozambique, Benin to the Cape, Tanzania to Senegal, Nigeria to Zimbabwe – rose up for the #KickTotalOutOfAfrica Week of Action, demanding an end to TotalEnergies’ plunder and destruction.
In Johannesburg, comrades marched from Standard Bank – Africa’s biggest funder of fossil fuels and one of Total’s staunchest backers – to the headquarters of TotalEnergies, whose record is soaked in land grabs, displacement and ecological devastation. At Standard Bank HQ,activistscondemned the financiers enabling fossil colonialism before handing over a memorandum.
Together with movements across the continent, we marched to:
- Condemn fossil colonialism and its financiers
- Demand reparations and restorative justice
- Call for governments to cancel contracts with TotalEnergies
- Advance working-class ownership and control of a just, green future
