CJC Solidarity Actions for Climate Justice in May 2025

In May, the Climate Justice Coalition (CJC) joined hands with communities and allies across South Africa and beyond in two powerful actions of solidarity. From challenging corporate destruction to backing frontline legal resistance, these actions maintain our commitment to a just, fossil-free future.

Global Action Against Glencore

On May 28, the CJC joined a global wave of resistance against Glencore during the corporation’s Annual General Meeting in Switzerland. In Johannesburg and Cape Town, activists gathered in protest, calling out Glencore’s role in fuelling genocide, war, displacement, and climate destruction—from Gaza to the Congo to mining-affected communities across South Africa.

The day opened with struggle songs and included powerful speeches from grassroots leaders, youth activists, and community representatives, including a Congolese activist who drew links between extractivism, apartheid, and ecological collapse. The action ended with a symbolic die-in to honour lives lost to genocide, mining, and climate injustice, sending a clear message: shut down Glencore’s death economy.

#StopTEEPSA: Standing With Coastal Communities

We continue to stand with communities along South Africa’s Western Cape coastline who are resisting TotalEnergies’ plans to drill offshore from Cape Town to Cape Agulhas. On 5 May, CJC supported our member organisations Green Connection and others and in their legal challenge against this harmful project.

Total’s fossil fuel expansion, from EACOP in East Africa to violence in Cabo Delgado, represents the worst of climate colonialism. We reject exploitation and environmental destruction for profit. We reject the disregard for fisher’s livelihoods. We demand climate justice, accountability, and a future free from fossil fuels.

This May, we joined in on actions that reflect the strength of people-powered resistance and international solidarity. The fight for climate justice is global, and the CJC  will continue to support impacted communities working for a just energy future for all.
